Onyx Black vs Coffee Brown: Which Mirai Naturals Shade Is Right for You?

Choosing a hair colour shade online is harder than picking one in person. There's no swatch to hold up against your skin, no stylist to talk you out of the wrong choice. If you're deciding between Mirai Naturals Onyx Black and Coffee Brown, here's how to actually get it right.

Start with your natural base colour, not your goal colour

The single biggest factor in how a colour shampoo turns out is the hair you're starting with. Colour depositing and dye shampoos work with your existing pigment, not over it the way a bleach or permanent salon dye does. That means the result you get is a blend of the shade you apply and the natural tone underneath.

If your natural hair is naturally dark brown to black, both shades will read true to their name, Onyx Black will give you a deep, cool black, and Coffee Brown will give you a warm, rich brown.

If your natural hair is lighter brown, or you have significant grey mixed through, Coffee Brown tends to blend more forgivingly. Onyx Black can occasionally read slightly harsher against lighter or more porous strands, since black has less room to blend softly the way brown does.

Think about the coverage you actually need

Both shades are formulated for full grey coverage, building over a few applications rather than in a single wash. The difference isn't in how much grey they eventually cover, it's in how the resulting colour looks against your specific mix of grey and natural pigment.

If your grey is scattered through mostly dark hair, either shade will cover it convincingly. If you have larger sections of solid grey (temples, a part line, or an all-over salt and pepper pattern), Coffee Brown often looks more natural since it mimics how brown hair typically fades with age, rather than presenting a stark, uniform black next to lighter roots as they grow back in.

Consider your maintenance routine

This part is the same for both shades: reapply every 10 to 15 days to maintain coverage. Neither shade requires more upkeep than the other. If you're deciding based on convenience rather than colour, this one's a wash (no pun intended).

Coffee Brown vs Onyx Black at a glance

Coffee Brown

  • Best for: naturally brown to dark brown hair, scattered or salt-and-pepper grey

  • Result: warm, rich brown tone

  • Good for: a softer, more natural-looking transition, especially at the root line

Onyx Black

  • Best for: naturally black to very dark brown hair

  • Result: deep, cool black tone

  • Good for: maintaining a bold, uniform black without warmth

Still not sure?

If you're genuinely between the two, a simple rule of thumb: look at a photo of your hair before it started greying, or check a section that hasn't gone grey yet. Whatever that natural colour is closer to, black or brown, is the shade to pick. The goal isn't to change your hair colour, it's to restore the one you already had.

Mirai Naturals Colour Shampoo and Conditioner is available in Onyx Black and Coffee Brown, both formulated for full grey coverage over a few applications, each with a 15-minute leave-in time.
